Framing options - Cherry blossom artwork

There are so many frame options, how do I choose....help!

The choices for custom frames can seem overwhelming, with countless different colours, finishes and thickness to consider, not to mention conservation, acidity and UV-blocking capabilities to keep your artwork in good condition.

Always remember, if in doubt K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid!)

I have dealt with numerous different suppliers for framing both mine and other peoples art. Below are some tips and recommended places to buy....

'What is a mount/mat and do I need one?'

The mount is a thin piece of card that separates the picture from the frame. The mount adds a border between the artwork and frame, creating a more elegant appearance that allows the piece to shine .As a general rule, you should try to find one with a low acidity level for preservation purposes. Otherwise, your piece might be damaged by ‘mat burn’, brown marks that spread across the artwork and ruin its appearance.

'What frame thickness should I go for?'

This is largely down to personal choice; a skinny frame can make your artwork look sleek and elegant, whereas a wider frame can create a bold impact in any space. As a rule of thumb, you should aim for a frame width that is skinnier than the mat. Otherwise, the proportions will look slightly odd.

'There's so many colours/finishes...'

My advice is if in doubt go for a simple white or light timber, generally this suits most artworks. If there is a particular colour in the artwork you could try and pick this out in the frame. Black frames give a stronger statement, which works well especially if it picks up on part of the image or item within the room.

What are the different framing options?

Great question! I get excited about all the different framing options on the market now (sad i know ;)...you can choose to consult a framers who will offer you an amazing bespoke service. I am happy to assist you in the decision making with this.

Most of my paintings/fine art prints are standard sizes to allow framing to be cost effective. There are so many different ways to frame artwork now...have some fun!
